Fluid – Engineered – Expressive
What Inspires you?
Natural forms – particularly those that display overlapping plates, like feathers/wings, fish scales and insects. Jewellery and artefacts from ancient Egypt and Amazonian tribes. Materials and process. Music.
What made you want to be a jewellery designer?
I sort of arrived at jewellery making during my final year at uni. I love working with my hands and for me jewellery encompasses a range of things that interest me. As a child I used to make puppets and small automatons. I also did a lot of dance and drama so there is a theatrical element in my work and movement is very important. My jewellery comes to life when worn in the same way a puppet or an automaton does when operated. I make jewellery essentially to explore and understand humanity. I am fascinated at how wearable objects affect our sense of identity and the way we feel. I recently realised a life long ambition to combine jewellery and dance in a short video piece which will be released in the New Year 2016.
If you weren’t a jewellery designer what do you think you would be?
I would make other kinds of art. Actually this is my plan, my jewellery will become part of a bigger portfolio of work. Otherwise I would love to be a dancer.
What’s the most exciting piece you have ever made?
Probably the Verto Necklace because it can transform into multiple different shapes. I have now made four variations on this design in different sizes.
What tool can you not live without?
That’s a hard one, there’s so many. Probably my flypress.
What do you listen to while you work?
BBC 6 Music, or my own music which is quite eclectic.
If you could choose anyone to wear your jewellery, who would it be?
I think my first choice would be Tilda Swinton
What’s your favourite piece on lovedazzle?
I love Gilly’s work and I think the Ombre Curved tug Bangle is a wonderful use of her trade mark elastic, plus I have a weakness for graduated colour.
